Extension Beef Cattle Management Series Announcement

The Robeson County Center of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service along with Anson, Richmond, Hoke, and Scotland County Extension Centers are pleased to announce a Beef Cattle Management Series for new or aspiring cattle farmers.

This series of workshops is targeted towards farmers who are in their early careers in the cattle industry or for farmers who are seriously contemplating getting into the cattle business. In 2009, we will have an Advanced Cattle Management Course that will be geared towards farmers with more experience. The purpose of the course is to help farmers who are new (or relatively new) to the cattle industry get a comprehensive look at proper management of a beef cattle business enterprise.

The classes will be held in Laurinburg on Thursday nights starting on January 17 and lasting through February 7. Additionally, on Saturday, February 9, we will conduct a tour of some local cattle farms as well as participate in some hands-on work.

The schedule is as follows:

  • January 17 (7 - 9 p.m.) Introduction to beef cattle, forage management, and fertilization.

  • January 24 (7 - 9 p.m.) Financial management, record keeping, and marketing.

  • January 31 (7 - 9 p.m.) Nutrition of beef cattle and forage-related disorders.

  • February 7 (7 - 9 p.m.) Reproduction, breeding, and health.

  • February 9 (8 a.m.-1 p.m.) Field trip to local cattle farms and hands-on activities.

A $25 fee will be charged for this series to cover refreshments and materials. This class will be limited to 30 participants, so anyone interested should contact Michele Shooter at (910) 671-3276 or in person at the County Extension Center by Friday, January 4, to register or for additional information. Individuals with disabilities and/or special needs desiring accommodations to participate in this activity should contact me by January 11.
