- Seeking an individual or couple to share in the creation of a garden, maintenance of an orchard, setting up a greenhouse, raising of chickens and a milk cow with the intention of growing food all 4 seasons. A time commitment of 10 hours a week of shared work toward this goal is anticipated for sharing the bounty of the harvest. An additional 10 hours per week of farm work would be required in exchange for housing (or you may choose to pay $400/mo rent). Individual must be able to pay utilities. Our vision is to move steadily toward the creation of a small community. Home ownership would be an option in time. The possibility for farming on this 300 acres is many and varied for the right individual. The farm is located 30 minutes NW of Asheville and consists of forest, fenced mountain pasture, barns and a large pond. Desirable candidates should be college graduates with a BS degree or higher in any of the following: turfgrass science, crop science, agronomy, soil science, agricultural business management, or any other plant science. Past farm work experience and current work experience in the agricultural and/or turf industry is an asset. Planning ahead, commitment to farm work, working with customers and co-workers, operating equipment, basic farm equipment maintenance, setting and operating irrigation equipment, problem solving skills, and knowledge of turfgrasses are valuable attributes. Slater Turf Farm, located in Western North Carolina produces cool season and warm season turfgrass for the market in upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina. It is a turfgrass sod producer specializing in branded and propriety turfgrasses suitable for the Carolinas. The owner expects to place a capable person in a position of responsibility to assist running the farm business, to grow, maintain, and harvest the turfgrass crop.

- New Life CDC in Roper, NC is seeking a Coordinator to manage the Agriculture Training for Job Creation and Farmland Preservation Project that will be teaching how to grow organic vegetables in the winter in unheated greenhouses. Applicants must have experience growing vegetables and have a passion for sustainable community development and organizing. They should want to work outdoors, be self-motivated and well organized, willing to work weekends, and be a resident of or be willing to relocate to Washington Co, NC. Full time with $200/month health insurance stipend, 2 weeks paid vacation, starting salary, $32,000 to $37,000. Send resume with cover letter and 3 references by October 9, 2009.
