Farm Management and Other Employment
A normal stop on the path to farming is working or managing in another farmer's operation. Working for a successful farmer is a solid way of earning farming skills and, since you are a paid employee, you get to see how an owner runs a business successful enough to afford paying you. And another thing: growing a farm business in a rural area often requires non-farm income to meet family living needs. Ag-related employment normally keeps you circulating through rural communities, hopefully where you want to live and farm.
(Memo from THE MANAGEMENT: Check back one of these days for a growing array of on-farm employment opportunities, but not just yet. In the meantime, check out opportunities on the links listed below. You never know what you might find and learn.)
agcareers.com
This site occasionally has opportunities for work on larger conventional farms in North Carolina and elsewhere in the southeast. This site also lists numerous opportunities with companies in the agribusiness sector.
Agriseek.com
This link should be plugged in for North Carolina. Registration required, listings are identified by "seeker" and "opening." Job seekers can post resumes, but accessing information about existing jobs (one listing was for managing an organic farm near Asheville) was pretty difficult. Well, at least we couldn't figure it out.
Federaljobsearch.com
No kidding. Search by state (as in "North Carolina") and career field (as in "Agriculture & Farming"), you might find yourself supervising inmates on a working prison farm. Or another federal or state-run farming operation or ag-related field.
